‘You’re up early,’ Belinda said, wondering whether Desiree was going to talk to her as she walked into the kitchen.

‘I didn’t sleep very well,’ the girl said coldly. ‘My mind was cluttered with images of you and…’

‘We’d better talk.’ Belinda sighed.

‘You’re the one who needs to talk,’ Desiree returned. ‘You’re the one who needs to explain.’

‘Yes, well…The thing is…’

“ ‘I’ll do anything to keep you and Desiree apart.” That’s what you said to Tony, isn’t it?’

‘Yes, but…’

“ ‘My sex life with my husband isn’t up to much.” How come you’re discussing your sex life with your next-door neighbour?’

‘Desiree, listen to me for a moment. You obviously heard snippets of my conversation with Tony, and you’ve got the wrong end of the stick. You’ve taken the bits you heard out of context.’

“ ‘She found my panties in the bushes.” Why were you telling Tony that I’d found your panties in the bushes?’

‘If you’d just listen to me and allow me to explain…I was talking about sex because I’ve been trying to protect you. God, I don’t know where to begin. Tony is a highly sexed man. When I said that I’d do anything to keep you and him apart, I was trying to explain that you want to go on to university and shouldn’t be distracted.’

‘He’s not distracting me.’

‘Isn’t he? How much work have you done since he moved in? How many days have you taken off college?’

‘OK, so I’ve had other interests, but…’

‘Tony has been taunting me, Desiree. He’s been saying that you’re young and beautiful and he could easily get you into his bed.’

‘He has a girlfriend. He’s told me that he’s not interested in anything other than friendship with me. Why are you lying?’

‘I’m not lying. To him, all this is a game. He knows how protective I am towards you, and he enjoys taunting me.’

‘Why tell him about your sex life with Dad? Why tell him intimate details about your marriage?’

‘I wasn’t telling him intimate details. He was saying that I should be having fun while Dad’s away. He said that things go stale after years of marriage and all I said was…I admitted that my sex life wasn’t up to much. Had you listened, you’d have then heard me say that the passion might die off but the love grows.’

‘And your panties? Why tell Tony that I found your panties in the bushes?’

‘Because he’d seen them there. He made some joke or other about someone leaving a pair of panties in the bushes. I said that the wind had blown them off the line and you’d found them. There was nothing dark or mysterious about our conversation, Desiree. You overheard bits and pieces, put two and two together and…’

‘Why are you still trying to keep us apart when I’ve told you that he has a girlfriend? He’s not interested in me, so why keep on like this?’

‘He said that you showed him your thong. I didn’t even know that you had a thong. And as for lifting your skirt up and showing it to Tony…’

‘I…There was nothing wrong with that.
